Traditional Colleges: Why They May Not Be Your Best Bet
Today we see a growing trend in the number of students who are opting to get their college degrees online rather than by physically attending a traditional college campus. This should come as no surprise, since technology and the Internet has made it possible to get access to information, media, and resources instantly in real-time from any computer that is connected to the Internet, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If your material status doesn’t allow to get your child’s good education, try grants for single mothers.
So when a prospective student is faced with making the decision about whether to attend an online school versus a traditional classroom, what might be some of the reasons why you might want to avoid a traditional college and opt for the online route instead?
1. A traditional college doesn’t bode well with people who have other scheduling conflicts and commitments such as work or family obligations. Far too many people would be put at a disadvantage who want to get a degree but can’t attend a physical classroom due to schedule conflicts, if it weren’t for the widespread availability of online degrees now.
2. A traditional college requires you to spend money and time on transportation in order to commute to school. Or, you may also have to consider the option to relocate to live on or near the college campus of your choice. This can be problematic for people in certain lifestyle situations.
3. Many students feel that physically commuting to school for the sake of attending a passive one hour lecture in which no questions may be asked is an inefficient use of their time.
4. Some traditional college classes place too much weight on classroom attendance, punctuality, and participation as part of your grade. So even if you get 100% on every test or every exam, your grade can suffer just because you weren’t able to physically make it to the class on a certain day or you were late.
5. In many cases, online colleges are cheaper than their traditional counterparts, because there is less physical overhead in terms of costs.
As you can see, there are many reasons why you may want to opt for attending an online college, because the number of disadvantages of attending a traditional college are many and are only growing in number.
