Ex-Marysville High star selected for Midwest League All-Star Game

Michael Walker (Marysville High) has been selected as a reserve for the Western Division in the Class-A Midwest League All-Star Game on June 21 at Quad Cities’ Modern Woodmen Park in Davenport, Iowa.

Walker, 22, who was drafted out of Pacific in the 14th round in 2010 by the Milwaukee Brewers, is second in the Midwest League in home runs (10) and RBIs (40). The left-handed-hitting third baseman for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers is hitting .282 with a .408 on-base percentage, .489 slugging percentage and .897 on-base plus slugging percentage.

In his first minor league season in 2010, the 6-foot-3, 215-pounder hit .277 with eight home runs and 41 RBIs in 74 games for the Rookie League Helena Brewers.

Walker is only the third player from Marysville High School selected in the major league draft. Right-handed pitcher William Wright was taken in the 38th round in 1967 by the Atlanta Braves and left-handed pitcher Brian Eubanks was picked in the 33rd round in 1988 by the Detroit Tigers.

Ray Webster, a second baseman, is the lone Marysville High product to play in the major leagues. He played for the Cleveland Indians in 1959 and the Boston Red Sox in 1960. Mike DePangher, a catcher, was a Marysville resident who played for the Philadelphia Quakers in 1884.

Five make All-Star teams

Hagerstown Suns catcher Dave Freitas (Elk Grove High, Cosumnes River) and Delmarva Shorebirds third baseman Tyler Kelly (UC Davis) will be North Division teammates, and Savannah Sand Gnats outfielder Cory Vaughn (Jesuit High) will be a member of the Southern Division squad for the Class-A South Atlantic League All-Star Game on June 21 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, Md.

Kinston Indians right-handed pitcher Preston Guilmet (Oakmont High) has been named to the Carolina team and High Desert Mavericks third baseman Vincent Catricala (Jesuit High) to the California League squad in the California League/Carolina League All-Star Game on June 21 at John Thurman Field in Modesto. Modesto Nuts manager Jerry Weinstein (Sacramento City) will lead the Cal League team, along with pitching coach Daryl Scott (Yuba City High). This is the first time Modesto has played host to the Cal/Carolina League All-Star Game.

Wheeler is honored

Tulsa Drillers center fielder Tim Wheeler (El Camino High, Sacramento State) was Topps Texas League Player of the Month. In May, he led the Double-A league with a .389 batting average, 79 total bases, 18 extra-base hits and 1.169 OPS and was second in the league with 24 RBIs and 25 runs scored.

Anderson is dialed in

Pawtucket Red Sox first baseman Lars Anderson (Jesuit High) “is hitting the ball better than he ever has,” said his father, George Anderson, recently at the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I high school playoffs. However, his .274 batting average doesn’t reflect how well he’s swinging, George Anderson said.

“Trouble is, every ball he hits is right at someone,” said the senior Anderson, who is an assistant coach for the Jesuit Marauders.

Bee attack avoided

Wheeler and reliever Casey Weathers (Laguna Creek High, Sacramento City) were on hand for a bizarre event last month in a game between the Drillers and host Northwest Arkansas Naturals when infielders, umpires and the batter all dropped to the ground to avoid a swarm of bees.

River Cats reap rewards

The River Cats have had three players named Pacific Coast League Player of the Week.

Right-handed reliever Willie Eyre, right-handed starting pitcher Travis Banwart and outfielder Jai Miller have won the award.

Be on the watch for the A’s 2010 first-round draft pick and power-hitting Stockton Ports outfielder Michael Choice and Midland RockHounds shortstop and 2009 No. 1 pick Grant Green as future River Cats additions.

Et cetera

Oklahoma City RedHawks infielder/outfielder Joe Inglett (Mesa Verde High) was released by the Houston Astros.

Erie SeaWolves right-handed pitcher Cory Hamilton (Sheldon High) was placed on the voluntarily retired list by the Detroit Tigers.

Right-handed pitcher Josh Roenicke (Nevada Union High) was claimed off waivers by the Colorado Rockies and assigned to the Triple-A roster of the Colorado SkySox.
