Final: Winton Woods 53, Fairfield 6

The postmortem from Charlie Fredrick Stadium:

Winton Woods piled up 415 yards of offense, including 347 yards on the ground, scored on five of its six possessions in the first half and didn’t punt in the game.

The Warriors’ defense held Fairfield to 79 total yards — 67 of those coming on the Indians’ only score, a pass from quarterback Jordan Ammon to wide receiver Donteea Dye.

Aaron Kemper scored four touchdowns, including a 10-yard burst up the middle to cap the scoring. Kemper has a total of nine touchdowns in the last two games.

The Warriors dominated the first half, scoring just before halftime after the long snap on a punt went over Robert Mincey’s head. Winton Woods recovered at the Fairfield 7, and two plays later, Aaron Kemper plowed in for a 2-yard touchdown to give the Warriors a 27-point lead with less than a minute left in the second quarter.

After scoring their first three touchdowns on quick drives, the Warriors are demonstrating an ability to grind it out as well. Their latest touchdown, a 20-yard pass from quarterback Gary Underwood to running back Aaron Kemper with 4:14 left before halftime, capped a 13-play, 68-yard drive.

Earlier, Underwood scored his second touchdown of the night on an 11-yard run following the Indians’ failure to cover a kickoff.

Fairfield’s defense has no answer for Underwood and running back Marques Graves. The Warriors’ duo accounted for 46 of 50 yards on a quick 5-play scoring drive, including a 28-yard catch-and-run to set up Underwood’s 18-yard scoring run on an option keeper.

And the Warriors covered the ensuing kickoff, claiming possession at the Indians’ 26-yard line with two minutes left in the first quarter.

Earlier, the Indians got on the scoreboard when senior wide receiver Donteea Dye got behind the Warriors’ defense, gathered in a long pass from quarterback Jordan Ammon, and went 67 yards for a touchdown.

Dye somersaulted into the end zone, drawing a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, and the Indians botched the extra point.

It didn’t take long for the Warriors to break the ice. After forcing Fairfield to punt on its first possession, Winton Woods marched down the field and hit paydirt when Graves took an option pitch from Underwood and swept into the end zone for a 12-yard touchdown to cap an 8-play, 55-yard drive.

Underwood started in place of senior quarterback Thomas Owens, who is still nursing a leg injury suffered in the opener against Elder.
