BIGGEST WINS

BOYS: East Chapel Hill 63, Apex 36

East Chapel Hill avenged an earlier loss to Apex on Monday night with a big 27-point win over the Cougars. Earlier this season, Sunil Ram hit a buzzer beater from the short corner to lift Apex past East Chapel Hill, but the Wildcats came ready defensively on Monday night. Ram led the Cougars with 12 points, but he was the only Apex player in double-figures. In addition, after Paul Kitoko scored 18-points and Aaron Hicks 14-points against Panther Creek on Friday, neither player scored on Monday. Bryson Gibson led East Chapel Hill with 19-points. The third quarter was the turning point. After East led Apex 29-23 at the half, the Wildcats came out in the third quarter and outscored Apex 28-1.

Middle Creek had to fight for a win in the first round on Monday night. The Mustangs, who lost a fourth quarter lead in the conference semifinals, came from behind to take the win over Pinecrest. Amber Battle led the Mustangs with a 10-point performance.

NEAR UPSETS

There were several close calls for some tpo-ranked teams on Monday night.

BOYS: Jordan 52, Panther Creek 47

Granted, Panther Creek defeated Jordan just a few weeks ago by a large margin, the Falcons were the conference champion out of the PAC 6 Conference. Panther Creek received the No. 5 seed out of the Tri-Nine. John Hood led Panther Creek in scoring with 19 points, Isaiah Johnson had 13, but it wasn’t enough. Jordan outscored Panther Creek 16-8 in the third quarter to separate itself.

BOYS: Wakefield 68, Person 60

A 28-18 advantage in the second quarter gave Wakefield a 46-31 lead at the half, but Person outscored the Wolverines 19-13 in the third quarter to make the game interesting. The top-seeded Wolverines escaped though thanks to a 22-point performance by Xavier Saddler-Mee and 16-points from Kasey Bryant.

GIRLS: Northern Durham 47, Panther Creek 44

This would have been a major upset. The PAC 6 regular season champion nearly fell to the No. 5 team in the Tri-Nine. The two teams were tied at 20-20 at the half, but Northern Durham outscored the Catamounts 16-11 in the third quarter and then held on to win the game. Mercedes Harris led Panther Creek with 14-points, while Allie Tuttle scored 10. The Knights were led by Tyler Holloway with 14-points. Jenna Frush scored 10-points for Northern.

TOP PERFORMANCES

BOYS: Cary duo Austin Brannen & Anthony Shelton

The Cary Imps struggled to separate themselves from Richmond County in the opening round of the state playoffs, but they managed to win – in large part because of the duo of Austin Brannen and Anthony Shelton. Brannen gave up his body several times during the game and finished with 23-points. Shelton had 22-points for the Imps. One of the highlights of the game featured a backdoor alley oop from Shelton to Brannen. Cary will now travel to Wakefield in the second round.

Green Hope struggled early. The Falcons trailed No. 5 Broughton 21-11 after the first quarter, but the Falcons tied it up going into halftime. Then the Falcons outscored Broughton 21-8 in the third quarter and 15-6 in the fourth quarter to get the 22-point win. Kristen Gaffney scored 23 points to lead Green Hope.
