Leading Off: Lots of local sports today to escape Kings drama

Local sporting scene springs into action

As the Kings drama hovers over Sacramento, the local sports calendar for a spring Saturday offers a break from the staying-or-going story line.

Sacramento State’s Spring Football Game starts at 10 a.m. today at Hornet Stadium, giving fans a chance to see a veteran team projected to push for a playoff berth next season.

The Hornets baseball team hosts 12th-ranked Fresno State in a doubleheader starting at 11:30 a.m. It’s senior day for Sac State softball, which takes on Loyola Marymount in a doubleheader starting at noon.

Or you can get up early and catch Sac State taking on UC Davis in rowing at 8:30 a.m. at Lake Natoma.

Across the causeway, UC Davis hosts Big West Conference leader Cal State Fullerton in softball and Pacific in men’s tennis, both at noon.

The River Cats, fresh from a successful eight-game trip, open a four-game homestand at Raley Field at 7:05 p.m. against Tucson.

It’s only April, but the Cats have shown they have the firepower and pitching to make a run at their 10th division title in 12 seasons.

Plenty of choices. None of them purple.

If you still need a basketball fix, you can always turn on the NBA playoffs on TNT or ESPN and dream of the Kings returning to the postseason. With “Sacramento” on their jerseys.
