Prep year in review: Moments, milestones and memories
The 2010-11 high school sports year provided another example of how the region holds up favorably across the Valley, the state and, in some cases, the country. Dano Graves was named the region’s first National Player of the Year in football since 1981. The Folsom Bulldogs quarterback shattered regional and state records while steering his team to a state Division II championship, taking down state No. 1 Grant in the process. Folsom finished No. 7 in the country, quite a feat considering thousands of teams compete. Jesuit and Granite Bay finished in the top five nationally in boys soccer. Jesuit coach Paul Rose was named the National Soccer Coach of the Year. Casey Taylor won a Division III football title for Del Oro, scoring one for coaches who refuse to buckle under parental pressure. El Camino girls basketball coach Bill Baxter earned his 600th career victory. The area also bid farewell to classy basketball coaches Harvey Tahara and Bob Jones. In the spring, highlights included Kendal Nielsen, who scored all 28 of Bear River’s points en route to a Division III section track and field team title.
