CHCA pitcher Ted Andrews commits to Furman

Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy senior right-handed pitcher/first baseman Ted Andrews has orally committed to play baseball at Furman University, according to CHCA baseball coach Larry Redwine.

The 6-foot-7, 220-pound pitcher is listed as one of the states top players in the 2012 class by multiple rating sources.

He has been consistently clocked in the 88-92 (mph) range in velocity, Redwine said. The big plus for him is that as his coordination has caught up with his rapid growth, he has gained better command of his pitches.

Andrews is expected to be one of the anchors of the Eagles staff and batting order this upcoming season as CHCA returns 13 of its top 14 players from last years conference championship team.

The good part for Furman is that they are getting one of the most respectful hard working young men I have coached over my 40 years coaching the game, Redwine said.

Newly elected board members to be briefed on Wake assignment plan

Wake County’s three newly elected school board members are expected to get an update Friday afternoon on the district’s new assignment plan that was adopted this week.

“We’re providing them a professional presentation with lots of hard-copy documents so that they can have it at their disposal so they can prepare for their board tenure,” Superintendent Tony Tata told reporters Friday morning.

The meeting is scheduled for 3 p.m.

The three board members-elect – Susan Evans, Christine Kushner and Jim Martin – have each said that they have unanswered questions about the three-year plan, which goes into effect beginning with the 2012-13 school year.

Tata has said it gives parents more input about where their children are assigned and also takes into account proximity, stability and student achievement when placing children in schools.

But some of the new members are concerned about whether students at low-performing schools would be guaranteed a seat at a higher-achieving school if the students wanted to switch schools.

Some current school board members have said they are worried that the assignment plan and other accomplishments over the past two years could be in jeopardy come December when the new members take office.

Five seats, including three incumbents’, were up for grabs in last week’s municipal elections.

Democratic-backed candidates won four of the races, including Evans, who defeated current board Chairman Ron Margiotta. He

UNC: Christian belief OKs dumping gay group member

Officials at North Carolina’s flagship university say a Christian singing group had the latitude to expel a member who identified himself as gay.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill says the decision by the Christian a cappella group Psalm 100 did not violate the school’s non-discrimination policy.

The university’s non-discrimination policy allows student groups to limit their memberships to students who share specific beliefs, but not on personal characteristics like race, age or sexual orientation.

The Philadelphia-based Foundation for Individual Rights in Education said Psalm 100 kicked the student out because he no longer lived up to the belief that the Bible restricts sex to heterosexual marriage.

Campus student affairs vice chancellor Winston Crisp said the university could not find evidence contradicting the group’s position.
