The Necessary but Insufficient Burdens of Self-Defense by Stephen Babb

The debate worlds head is exploding at the proposition of Affirmative debaters having to demonstrate that repeated domestic abuse meets the multiple conditions for qualification as self-defense. For deadly force to be justified as self-defense, the conventional logic is that certain requirements must be met, namely: the threat must be imminent, and deadly force (as opposed to less deadly alternatives) must be necessary for someone to prevent serious harm from being inflicted. Proportionality may also be considered a requirement insofar as it wouldnt be acceptable to use deadly force to stop a minor affront or injury.

In the most technical sense, a 1NC that requires the 1AC to demonstrate how repeated domestic abuse is consistent with these requirements is indeed holding the AC to multiple necessary but insufficient burdens. This should say more about our impoverished burdens theory than it does the abusiveness of the NC strategy.

After all, in many instances, the 1AC is advancing self-defense as a justification.

Florin beats Kennedy in Metro Conference girls high school basketball

Larry Price doesn’t just sweat. He liquidates. And not in a change-into-cash kind of way.

Price is the bouncer-sized Florin High School girls basketball coach who can work himself into a lather during warmups. If it’s a tense contest, like Wednesday’s key Metro Conference game against No. 8 Kennedy, the forehead moisture comes at a full drip.

Here’s how Florin ace rebounder Daijah Joe-Smith explains it: “It’s because we’re teenagers.”

Teenagers growing up fast and learning their roles and the game in general.

Joe-Smith and her mates used a 10-0 run to open the second half to spark a 53-38 victory for the No. 9 Panthers in south Sacramento.

Joe-Smith is a 5-foot-7 junior forward who scores on the baseline like a guard with quick bursts, and she snares rebounds with purpose. She had 12 points and 16 rebounds to lead the charge.

Florin junior guard Deja Conger led all scorers with 20 points, almost twice her average, and had four three-pointers as Florin exhibited a devastating inside-outside game.

UNC’s Friday Center considers expanding services for seniors

The Friday Center at the University of North Carolina is considering how it can better serve a growing senior citizen population after the state stopped providing free non-credit classes in the UNC system to people over 65.

Director Rob Bruce said Wednesday that the Friday Center has been tracking baby boomers and retirees moving to the area– trendsthat suggest North Carolina will see a 40 percent increase of people 65 and older over the next 10 years.

“The question that we have is: What is the university’s responsibility to educate this population?” Bruce said. “We know we have programs already that serve this population, (but) should we expand?”

The William and Ida Friday Center for Continuing Education offers distance-education course and access to campus courses for part-time students.

The state eliminated a tuition waiver program for people over 65 in its 2009-10 budget, a cut that saved the state about $300,000 a year.

Bill Massey is a recently retired middle school teacher who wanted to take a writing class at his alma mater, North Carolina State University. W

Wake County school officials said Tuesday that they have already received more than 6,000 comments from parents on a proposal that would change bus schedules and reduce the numbers of routes.

The Wake County Public School System posted the survey on its website last week to gather public comment on the changes proposed for the 2012-13 school year.

Parents can review what’s planned for their assigned schools and offer their feedback until Thursday.

The school board is expected to revisit the plans at its Feb. 21 meeting. Any changes to next year’s bell schedule must be in place by the end of March.

Administrators say the proposed changes would increase efficiency and accommodate growth while reducing the bus fleet by 112 buses, saving approximately $6 million.

USciences Students Benefit from Improved Access to Health Services at SHAC

For USciences students, taking control of personal health paves the way for a responsible future in healthcare. Students are now able to do so at USciences Student Health and Counseling (SHAC) where two healthcare providers were recently hired to provide students with more accessible, inclusive healthcare on campus. A larger staff promises a broader range of services and the expected byproduct is the increase in students knowledge of the functions of a medical practice.

Paul Furtaw, PsyD, Director of SHAC, explained the impact of Nurse Practitioner Binh Luong, MSN, CRNP , and Anthony P. Acquavella, MD, MPH, the newest editions to the SHAC team:

Theyre high-quality medical professionals and for years, we havent had sufficient staffing in order to be able to meet students where theyre at, Dr. Furtaw explained. Students need somebody who has expertise and yet is still going to engage them with respect. Thats what we have now.

Nurse Practitioner Luong and Dr.
