Announcing the K12 and Girl Scouts I Want to Rock the Mall YouTube contest!

Did you know that next year marks the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts? 100 years of helping girls develop confidence, build character and volunteering to make the world a better place. More than 50 million American women have been a girl scout during their childhood— including me! I have fond memories of earning badges at the local park, attending summer camps, making craft projects, earning my badges and doing all sorts of service projects. Today, I get to witness my own 9 year old daughter discover the fun and empowerment of this great organization.

To help mark this momentus occassion, we are sponsoring a K¹² and Girl Scouts “Rock the Mall”  YouTube contest. To enter, Girl Scouts must write an original song expressing what its like to be a Girl Scout today. The contest winner will get to perform their song live, on stage, in front of hundreds of thousands of people at the Girl Scouts Rock the Mall: 100th Anniversary Sing-Along, in Washington, DC on June 9, 2012. The contest winner will also be introduced by and share a stage with “American Idol” finalist, K¹² student and Girl Scout alumna Thia Megia.

Thia Megia, a K¹² student, singer, musician and finalist on the hit FOX series “American Idol,” is lending her talent to serve as official Ambassador for the I Want to Rock the Mall YouTube contest. While participating in the “American Idol” live tour across the country, Megia balances her performing career and school work as student at California Virtual Academies powered by K¹². “I know that girls are doing it all these days, so I cant wait to see the videos, hear the creative songs and join our talented winner at Girl Scouts Rock the Mall. Its going to be truly inspiring,” said Thia Megia.

The Girl Scouts Rock the Mall: 100th Anniversary Sing-Along will be the largest gathering of Girl Scouts with an estimated 200,000 Girl Scouts from around the world attending. Both my daughter and I are planning to join in, how about you?
