Online Education Offers Families an Educational Choice

Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year to our new and returning K12 families. As we start the new school year, we are seeing more national media coverage about the benefits of online education and how online schooling offers families an educational choice,  including recent coverage of two K12 schools, Ohio Virtual Academy and Tennessee Virtual Academy shared below.

Local family enjoys online public school

Elwell decided to take her children out of traditional school because she wanted more of a challenging education where there were not any distractions that may come with a classroom setting.

“My concern is curriculum and academics and I really wanted the kids to have a strong academic background. I wanted them to be able to work without interruption and that was key for us,” Elwell said.

The reasons parents choose OHVA varies. Some have children who are getting bullied or students with learning disabilities who are not getting the attention they need. Teen moms are able to go to class with their child standing by and the program offers flexibility to active students, such as professional gymnasts.

New Tennessee Virtual Academy attracts thousands

Josh Williams is head of schools for the Tennessee Virtual Academy. He says hes been flooded with calls and interest about the curriculum. One family moved to Tennessee just to enroll their kids.

“By being as flexible as we are and setting that curriculum per child, what we can do is help them more in math or English or science or social studies,” Williams said.

“We are pioneers of education. Its a great experience, a great opportunity because this is brand new to Tennessee. Everyone is excited about it and to know that I was there from day one is amazing,” Irvin said.

Virtual academy officials say they plan to add grades 9-12 soon.

If youre wondering what kind of students attend, officials say they include athletes, students with long-term illnesses and even average students.
