USciences Events at The Philadelphia Science Festival
University of the Sciences is proud to be a core partner of The Philadelphia Science Festival, a city-wide collaboration showcasing science and technology from April 15-28. Part of a national movement to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers, it builds on Philadelphia’s history of innovation with dozens of free events at museums, universities and neighborhood libraries.
Here is a list of events and activities sponsored by USciences. Almost all of the activities are free and school-aged children are encouraged to attend. To .
April 16, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Science Carnival (free)
Benjamin Franklin Parkway
10-minute Ice Cream: Make ice cream in 10 minutes using yummy ingredients, liquid nitrogen and of course chemistry! This experiment promises to surprise, delight and satisfy the appetite!
- Chemistry Twister: It’s elementary!!! Learn about the atoms and groups by playing periodic table Twister—learning the interactive way!
- What’s Your Carbon Footprint?: Learn how to calculate the impact on the environment of what you do and how you do it!
- What’s in a Stroke?: Test your knowledge about the risk factors for stroke. Guided by liscensed physical therapists and students from University of the Sciences, join in some easy & fun prevention activities. (tentative)

Do You Know Where Your Stormwater Goes? (free)
Lower Mill Creek Garden, corner of
Visit the Lower Mill Creek Garden and learn natural, easy ways to control stormwater in a city environment. Learn why the use native plants are so important.

The Wistar Institute’s Author Series: The Emperor of all Maladies: A Biography of Cancer by Siddhartha Mukherjee (This event is free and open to the public; however, registration and printed tickets are required to attend the event)

Wild Animals of The Woodland Cemetery (free)
This guided nature walk through The Woodlands National Historic Cemetery will highlight birds, mammals, and insects. Students will use binoculars to observe wildlife and discover how food, water, and shelter can be found in unexpected places.

Science and a Trip to the Cosmos (free)
McNeil Science & Technology Center, USciences Campus
Be fascinated by hearing the first hand adventures of Dr. Guion Bluford, the first African American in Space and former native of West Philadelphia. Talk will be followed by star-gazing in Clark Park through telescopes provided by the Franklin Institute.

Science on The Simpsons (free)

Hear Physics Professor Dr. Paul Halpern talk about what The Simpsons can teach us about physics, robots, life, and the universe.
April 25, 7 p.m.
Capacitor (free)
Academy of Natural Sciences
Capacitor, an eco-dance company, creates boundary-breaking contemporary dance works in collaboration with members of the scientific community. The Perfect Flower features sinuous movement, raw feats of strength, and elegant suspensions around steel motion sculptures.Students, faculty, & staff from USciences & UArts along with local high school groups are invited to participate in a post-performance discussion of the relationships between science and art. Co-sponsored event with Philadelphia International Festival fo the Arts and the Franklin Institute. 
April 26, 1 to 3 p.m.
Open Lab Day (Free)
USciences Campus
Across the city colleges and universities will open their science labs to high school students. Demonstrations, explanations, and tours are key components of the experience. Participating departments include: biology, chemistry, physics, and pharmaceutical sciences.
April 26, 4 p.m.
Cool Jobs Panel Discussion (free)
USciences Campus
Following Open Lab Day, high school students will hear about “cool jobs” in science from a panel of alumni from colleges and universities across the city.
April 28, 6 to 9 p.m.
Forensic Science Murder Mystery Night at the Mutter Museum ($20 – will require online pre-registration)
The Mutter Museum,
Enjoy an evening of murder and mystery at the Mutter Museum. USciences faculty along with other experts will analyze clues of the murder through various scientific methods.
The Philadelphia Science Festival is being presented by The Dow Chemical Company with additional support by the National Science Foundation, Drexel University, GlaxoSmithKline, Day & Zimmermann, Philadelphia University, University of Pennsylvania, University of Pennsylvania Center for Bioethics, University of the Sciences and La Salle University. The Franklin Institute is organizing the effort.
